Molly P. Brown
Virginia Beach, Virginia

Ms. Brown, the 1999 Volunteer Leadership Award winner, has continued to lead efforts to expand the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. Since Brown received her award, the Refuge has grown nearly 750 acres and received nearly $20 million in congressional funding.
In addition to securing several million dollars in land acquisition appropriations, Brown is also active in educating land managers and volunteers; teaching students who visit the Refuge about the importance of protecting and preserving wetland habitats for wildlife; and directing efforts to acquire lands that will buffer adverse effects of development on the Back Bay.
Brown has played a central role in developing local and national partnerships to expand and protect the Refuge. Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has collaborated with the City of Virginia Beach to expand recreational opportunities for the public by adding canoe and kayak launching areas.
Since its inception in 1938, the Refuge has nearly doubled in size and is still growing, thanks in large part to Brown's efforts.
