Diane Nygaard

Oceanside, California

Photo by Jim MachungWith a recent Wetland Reserve Program grant, Ms. Diane Nygaard, the Wetland Community Leader Award Winner, has initated work to restore an acre of wetlands. She is also organizing a watershed tour, scheduling a community education program lecture/field trip on local water shed issues, and leading efforts to acquire sensitive lands and reduce the impacts of planned development projects.

Nygaard has worked with her local watershed network to fight plans for 20 desalination plants that are set to be built along the California coast, and led funding and other efforts supporting the creation and implementation of the Agua Hedionda Watershed Management Plan, which she and her organization hope will get accepted by local jurisdictions to integrate planning and funding.
