Larry J. Smith
Memphis, Tennessee
Mr. Smith, 1997 Winner for Volunteer Leadership and formerly of the Wolf Creek Conservancy, now protects wetlands in his new post in the Shelby County Government. Working with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, and others, he continues to focus on Wolf River floodplain protection.
His current work has led to the protection of over 3,000 acres of urban wetlands, and the design and implementation of a 12 million dollar project to establish the Wolf River Restoration site. When the land acquisition has been completed, there will be 4-5,000 acres of habitat protected, as well as a stable river.
The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that work on this Wolf River project, which includes several weirs and the acquisition of 2,000 acres to serve as a wildlife corridor, boat ramps, and trails, will be complete in December 2010.
